Interview with John Boehner
(as printed in Cox Newspapers)
Posted by Scott Owens
- December 17, 2007 @ 10:22am EST
Nine-term Eighth District
Congressman and U.S. House Minority Leader John
Boehner filed paperwork with the Butler County Board of
Elections to run for
what could be his 10th term in Congress. The veteran
congressman reflected
on his year as head of the GOP, and on what he hopes
2008 will bring.
"A lot of people over the last couple of years have
thought Republicans have
lost their way," said the former West Chester Twp.
trustee. "I've spent a
lot of time getting Republicans to stand up for fiscal
conservatism...just
getting away from wasteful Washington spending, and,
frankly, I think that's
gone very well." Improving cooperation across the aisle
has not gone as
smoothly as he had hoped, he said, but he is still
optimistic the parties
can come together.
"Congress has the lowest approval rating almost in
history, and we can't do
our jobs very well without the support of the American
people," he said,
adding that better bipartisanship remains one of his top
priorities.
"I just think I need to work toward changing the tone in
Washington," he
said.
"I think if anyone can do it, it's John," said Patti
Alderson, founder of
The Community Foundation of West Chester/Liberty and a
long-time
acquaintance of the congressman. "He's got a sense of
patriotism and honor
that's hard not to respect." The congressman noted he
expects the topic of
immigration to rear its head during the 2008 campaign.
"Immigration, immigration, immigration," he said. "It's
probably the number
one issue we hear from constituents about." In the wake
of the immigration
bill's failure in this year's Senate, however, he said
he does not expect to
see substantive reform in the near future.
"Nobody in Washington wants to touch the issue with a
10-foot pole," he
said. "I think there may be some unanimity after the
presidential race, but
I doubt there is before." And of the 2008 presidential
race, he said he
feels confident about the potential Republican nominees.
"I feel fairly confident Republicans will be able to
work with our nominee
to offer American people a platform with real
solutions," he said.
"I've known John for many years," said Scott Owens,
executive director of
the Butler County GOP. "It's going to take people like
him and his staff to
put the GOP machine back into play again."

West Chester, Mary Tellup of Oxford, Brown Cornett of
Trenton and Bill Lack of Liberty Township.
This year the event was held at the Oscar Event Center in
Jungle Jims in Fairfield.
The two biggest awards are the Republican/Volunteer of the
Year, this year awarded to Scott Owens of West Chester, and
the Lifetime Achievement Award, which was presented to Ed

A number of Republicans were on hand at the ceremony,

I was shocked, Owens said. I have done just about every

The Supreme Court of Ohio Website
Judge John J.B. Connaughton, who served the Butler County
Court Area II, died Saturday, March 31. He was 68.
Connaughton, who retired in January from illness two months
after being elected to a third term, was on the bench for
more than 15 years overseeing cases in Fairfield, Hanover
and Liberty townships.
The consensus of any of the attorney or judges would be
that he was not only a great judge but just an extremely
decent man as well, Hamilton attorney Jack Garretson told
the Hamilton Journal News. He was a judge who would
absolutely hear all the facts and wasn't afraid to make a
decision really regardless of who liked it and didn't like.
Connaughton received his bachelor's degree from Xavier
University and his law degree from the University of
Cincinnati in 1963. He was admitted to the Ohio bar in May
1964.
Funeral services are at 10 a.m., Wednesday, April 4 at the
Queen of Peace Church, at 2550 Millville Ave. in Hamilton.
Visitation is from 5 to 8 p.m. Tuesday, April 3 at the Webb
Noonan Funeral Home, at 240 Ross Ave. in Hamilton.

Boehner re-elected to House
role
Cincinnati Business
Courier - November 17, 2006
Republicans in the House of Representatives re-elected two
top leaders on Friday, including Rep. John Boehner, from
Ohio's Eighth District, 10 days after voters moved Democrats
into power in both the House and Senate.
House Republicans stuck with Boehner to head their caucus,
with Roy Blunt of Missouri remaining his deputy as party
whip. They survived challenges by Mike Pence of Indiana and
John Shadegg of Arizona. Boehner was first elected
Republican leader only about 10 months ago to replace Tom
DeLay of Texas, who stepped down after being indicted on
campaign finance charges.
In a closed-door meeting of House Republicans, Boehner was
re-elected in a secret ballot, 168-27. The vote count in the
Blunt race was 147-57.
